| 12–24 in. | $150–$350 | Most common home stump |
| 24–36 in. | $300–$500 | More grinding time on the root flare |
| 36 in. and up | $400–$700+ | Old oaks; may need a bigger machine |
| Each extra stump, same visit | $50–$150 | Trip and setup already paid |
| Haul chips away (add-on) | $50–$150 | Raking chips back in is usually included |
| Full stump extraction | $300–$1,000+ | Only for building or same-spot replanting |
Ranges from JH Tree Service's 2026 NJ stump grinding guide, for a standard grind 4–6 inches below grade with easy access. For a per-inch comparison, the ProMatcher NJ cost report averages about $4.28 per inch of diameter. Most single stumps fall inside the $100–$500 range in our Ocean County stump grinding cost guide. Your real price comes from the company that sees the stump.
How to measure your stump (and why it's bigger than you think)
- Measure at the ground, not the cut. Pricing uses the widest point at ground level, and that includes the flared roots. A tree that was 18 inches through the trunk can easily measure wider at the base.
- Put the tape in the photo. Lay a tape measure across the widest point and take the picture from above. That one photo gets you a firmer number than a description.
- Count the surface roots. Big oaks and maples often have roots running across the lawn. Grinding those out is extra, so say whether you want them done.
- Per inch vs. per stump. Some companies quote by the inch with a minimum. Others give one flat price for the whole yard. Once minimums, roots, access and cleanup are added, compare the written totals, not the rates.

| Ocean County setting | What's different | Price effect |
|---|---|---|
| Barrier island and bay-front lots: LBI, Seaside Park, Lavallette, Ortley Beach | Narrow side yards and fences, stumps near bulkheads, decks, AC pads and outdoor showers. Often only one stump, so the minimum applies | Up: small walk-behind grinder, slower careful work |
| Pinelands-edge yards with pitch pine: Jackson, Manchester, Barnegat, Little Egg Harbor | Pines often come out in groups, so several stumps get ground in one visit. Softwood grinds faster | Down per stump when bundled |
| Older mainland neighborhoods with big oaks: Toms River, Brick, Point Pleasant, Lakewood | Hard oak wood, wide root flare, surface roots near driveways and walks | Up: more grinding time |
| Newer lots and filled ground | Buried fill, old fence posts, concrete or rocks dull grinder teeth | Up: ask before work starts |
| Open front yard with street access | Large grinder can drive straight up to it | Lowest for its size |
The effects listed (access, wood hardness, buried debris, surface roots, multiple stumps) are the price factors in JH Tree Service's 2026 NJ stump grinding guide, applied to typical Ocean County lots.
Checklist: what to send for a quote that holds
- A photo of each stump with a tape measure across the widest point at ground level.
- Your narrowest gate width and a photo of the path from the street.
- What's within a few feet of the stump: foundation, fence, bulkhead, patio, AC pad, sprinkler heads, landscape lighting, an invisible dog fence.
- The depth you want. A standard grind is 4–6 inches below grade. If you plan to replant, sod or put in pavers, ask for 8–12 inches, which costs more (JH Tree Service's 2026 NJ stump grinding guide).
- What happens to the chips: raked back in, hauled away, or left for mulch.
- Whether surface roots are included.
- Every stump on the property, and any your neighbor wants done the same day.
- Confirmation that someone has requested the free utility markout through NJ One Call (811). Private lines like irrigation aren't marked, so flag them yourself.
- The company's NJ Licensed Tree Care Operator number and insurance certificate (NJ Board of Tree Experts; see how to check a NJ tree care license).
Grind now, or wait?
Leaving a stump costs nothing up front, but hardwood stumps like red maple and oak often send up sprouts, and a big oak stump can take years to rot away (see stump sprouts and replanting). If a tree is coming down anyway, grinding the stump on the same visit saves a second trip charge. Late fall and winter are often slower for tree crews, so quotes can be easier to get than in spring. FAQ
How much does it cost to grind a 24-inch stump in Ocean County?
A published 2026 New Jersey guide puts a 12 to 24 inch stump at about $150 to $350 and a 24 to 36 inch stump at about $300 to $500, ground 4 to 6 inches below grade with the chips raked back in. Tight access, big oak roots or extra cleanup push it toward the top of the range.
Why does grinding one small stump cost $100 or more?
Most companies have a minimum charge per visit, commonly about $100 to $150 according to one NJ company's guide, because hauling the grinder to your yard costs the same whatever the stump size. A single small stump usually just pays the minimum.
Is it cheaper to grind several stumps at once?
Yes. The same guide says additional stumps on the same visit often run about $50 to $150 each, because the trip and setup are already paid. Ask neighbors if they have stumps too.
Is a pine stump cheaper to grind than an oak stump?
Usually. Softwood like pitch pine grinds faster than hardwood like oak, and big old oaks often have a wide root flare and surface roots that add time. Size and access still matter more than species.
How do I measure a stump for a quote?
Measure across the widest point at ground level, including the flared roots, not the trunk higher up. Send a photo with the tape measure in it, plus a photo of the path and gate the grinder would use.
Do I need a permit to grind a stump in New Jersey?
Grinding the stump of a tree that is already down generally doesn't need a tree removal permit, but removing a standing tree may. You should still request the free NJ One Call (811) utility markout before grinding.
