Short answer: In fall, do safety pruning (dead, broken or hanging limbs) and wait for late fall to winter for structural pruning. Oaks should be pruned only December through February to avoid oak wilt, per Rutgers. Don't prune spring-flowering shrubs (azalea, rhododendron, lilac, forsythia, bigleaf hydrangea) in fall, or you cut off next year's flowers.

Why oaks get special treatment

Ocean County is oak and pine country. Rutgers recommends pruning oaks only while they're fully dormant, December through February (Rutgers NJAES fact sheet FS1392). Oak wilt is a fungal disease spread by sap-feeding beetles that find fresh wounds in the growing season; New York's DEC guidance tells tree workers the same thing and recommends sealing unavoidable warm-season wounds with latex paint (New York DEC oak wilt guidance). That's also why storm-damaged oak limbs should be cut clean promptly, and why winter is a good time to book crown work on big oaks in Toms River, Brick and Jackson.

What is worth doing in fall

  • Hazard limbs: remove dead, cracked or hanging branches over roofs, driveways and wires before nor'easter season (nor'easter checklist).
  • Inspect after leaf drop: with leaves off, cracks, cavities and fungus are easier to spot (warning signs).
  • Book winter work now: tree crews are slower December–February, and frozen ground protects lawns (best time to remove or trim).
  • Water evergreens deeply before the ground freezes (winter burn guide).

Mistakes we see every fall

  • Topping trees to make them "storm safe." It creates weak regrowth that fails more easily.
  • Shearing azaleas and rhododendrons into balls in October.
  • Cutting into the bare interior of Leyland cypress or arborvitae.
  • Ladders against trees near the service drop; leave anything near wires to a pro.

FAQ

Is fall a good time to prune trees in New Jersey?

Light work like removing dead, broken or hazardous branches is fine any time. For structural pruning, late fall after leaf drop through winter is better than early fall, and oaks should be pruned only in December through February, per Rutgers.

Why shouldn't I prune oaks in the fall?

Rutgers advises pruning oaks only when fully dormant, December through February, to avoid spreading oak wilt, which is carried by sap beetles attracted to fresh wounds. If an oak is wounded in the growing season, cover the cut promptly with latex paint.

What shrubs should I not prune in fall?

Spring bloomers such as azalea, rhododendron, forsythia, lilac and bigleaf hydrangea already set next year's flower buds. Fall pruning cuts off the flowers. Prune them right after they bloom.

Does fall pruning cause new growth that freezes?

Heavy pruning in late summer and early fall can push tender new growth that winter damage kills. Wait until plants are dormant for anything more than light cleanup.
