Tree permits in Ocean Township

Ocean Township's Chapter 373, “Tree Removal/Replacement,” requires a permit from the Zoning Officer before removing a non-street tree of 6 inches DBH or more, or a street tree of 2.5 inches DBH or more. The application needs a plot plan or survey showing the trees, and replacement is generally required: one to four new trees depending on the size of the tree removed, planted within 12 months, or a payment in lieu (Ocean Twp Code Ch. 373, tree removal application). Hazard trees may be exempt. Confirm with the township.

Local notes

Much of the township is in the Pinelands Area (Pinelands Commission). Bayfront homes face the same wind exposure as the rest of the shore, so pruning dead limbs before hurricane season is worthwhile.

Before you hire

New Jersey requires tree care businesses to be licensed through the NJ Board of Tree Experts. Ask for the company's Licensed Tree Care Operator number and certificate of insurance. For stump grinding, the free 811 utility markout is required before digging (NJ One Call).

Storm damage or a tree on a wire?

If there is immediate danger, call 911. Stay away from downed lines and report them to your electric utility. Then see what to do after a storm and what insurance usually covers.
