Tree Removal & Stump Grinding in Ship Bottom, NJ

Ship Bottom is where the Route 72 causeway lands on Long Beach Island, so it's the first stop for anyone coming onto the island. It's a small, busy borough of closely spaced homes, with ocean blocks to the east and bay lagoons to the west. Tell us about your job and we'll pass it to one local, independent tree company that serves Ship Bottom.

Tree permits in Ship Bottom

Ship Bottom regulates tree removal under Ship Bottom Code, Ch. 8.70. Before removing a street tree 2.5 inches or more in diameter at breast height, or any other tree 6 inches or more on your property, you submit a tree removal application to the zoning officer, and no tree may be removed until it's approved. An application fee applies, and removed trees generally have to be replaced, with the number of replacements depending on size, planted within 12 months and kept alive for two years. The chapter separately defines hazard trees (dead, dying, diseased or infested, damaging a structure, or judged a threat by a certified arborist or Licensed Tree Expert). Confirm the fee and process with the borough before work starts.

Local notes for Ship Bottom

  • Causeway traffic: Route 72 and the Boulevard back up badly on summer weekends. Fall through spring is far easier for getting a bucket truck or chipper in.
  • Japanese black pines: they're everywhere on LBI, and many are declining. See our black pine decline post.
  • Bay vs. ocean: lagoon-side lots flood and get salt-soaked soil; ocean blocks get wind and spray. Shallow roots in sand mean trees can tip in a nor'easter.
  • Tight lots: expect climbing and sectional removal, and narrow walk-behind stump grinders.

Before you hire

New Jersey requires tree care businesses to be licensed through the NJ Board of Tree Experts. Ask for the company's Licensed Tree Care Operator number and certificate of insurance. For stump grinding, the free 811 utility markout is required before digging (NJ One Call).

Storm damage or a tree on a wire?

If there is immediate danger, call 911. Stay away from downed lines and report them to your electric utility (JCP&L, 1-888-544-4877, serves most of Ocean County). Then see what to do after a storm and what insurance usually covers.
