What happens when the crew arrives
- Safety check: they confirm no lines are involved and look at how the tree is loaded. A tree resting on a house is often holding tension and can shift when cut.
- Stabilize: removing weight off the roof comes first, usually piece by piece with ropes, a bucket truck or a crane (crane removal costs).
- Tarp: many crews can tarp a hole once the tree is off; ask, since a roofer may need to do it.
- Cleanup later: the trunk and brush on the ground can be cut up and hauled on a second, cheaper visit.

Emergency and after-hours work usually costs more than scheduled removal. There's no standard surcharge, so get the total in writing before work starts, and ask whether cleanup and stump grinding are included. For normal price ranges, see the 2026 tree removal cost post. Photograph everything before the tree is moved and call your insurer early; see what homeowners insurance covers and what to do when a tree is down.
Avoid storm chasers
After big storms, out-of-area crews go door to door. Before anyone climbs a tree on your house: check the company's NJ tree care license, ask for proof of liability and workers' comp insurance, and get a written estimate. Home improvement contractor registration can be checked through the NJ Division of Consumer Affairs home improvement contractor lookup. Don't hand over a large cash deposit.
Reduce the next emergency
Most emergency calls involve trees that showed warning signs first: dead tops, cracks, fungus at the base, or a new lean. Review the nor'easter warning signs, check leaning and split trees after a storm, and see trees near JCP&L lines. We cover the whole county, including Toms River, Brick, Lakewood, Berkeley and Barnegat. Request help on the emergency tree service page.
FAQ
What counts as an emergency tree removal?
A tree or large limb that is on or through the house, blocking the only way in or out, on a car, or actively threatening to fall on people or a structure. A tree on a power line is a utility emergency: call JCP&L or 911, not a tree company first.
Does emergency tree removal cost more?
Usually. Night, weekend and storm-surge work often costs more than a scheduled job because of crew overtime, cranes and risk. Get the price in writing before work starts, even in an emergency.
Will my insurance pay for emergency tree removal?
If a covered peril drops a tree on a covered structure, many policies pay for removal from the structure, often up to a limit. A tree that fell on the lawn without hitting anything usually isn't covered. Call your insurer and take photos before the tree is moved.
How do I avoid storm chasers after a storm?
Ask for the company's NJ tree care license number and proof of insurance, get a written price, and don't pay large cash deposits to someone who knocked on your door. In New Jersey, tree companies need to be licensed through the state Tree Experts Board.
