Wood-by-wood guide
| Wood (common here) | Seasoning time (split) | How it burns | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Oak (red, black, white) | 12+ months; 6 minimum | Long, hot, few sparks | Best local firewood; slow to dry |
| Red maple | 6–12 months | Moderate | Splits easily |
| Pitch pine | 6–9 months | Fast, hot, more sparks and creosote if wet | Fine as kindling or mixed |
| Beetle-killed pine | Don't keep | n/a | Chip or haul to avoid spreading insects |
| Black cherry, holly | 6–12 months | Good | Smaller volumes |
Seasoning guidance from EPA Burn Wise; times are typical and depend on split size and airflow.
Rules for moving firewood
- Keep it local: the NJ Department of Agriculture and Don't Move Firewood advise using firewood near where it was cut, generally within 50 miles.
- Lanternfly: every New Jersey county is under quarantine (NJDA spotted lanternfly quarantine notice). Check logs for gray egg masses before loading them for a trip.
- Pine beetles: southern pine beetle has killed many pitch pines in the Pinelands (NJDEP); dead, infested pine is better chipped.

- Stack off the ground with airflow; cover only the top (EPA Burn Wise).
- Keep piles at least 30 feet from the house in Pinelands-edge towns like Jackson, Manchester, Lacey and Barnegat, where wildfire risk is real (Pinelands Commission fire-safety tips).
- Never burn painted, treated or wet wood, and get the chimney inspected yearly.
Asking the tree crew to leave wood
Leaving logs cut to stove length usually costs less than full haul-away, since the crew skips loading and disposal. Ask for it in the quote, along with stump grinding as a separate line (2026 price table). Need a tree down? See tree removal or your town: Toms River, Manchester, Lacey.
FAQ
How long does oak firewood need to season?
At least six months split and stacked outdoors, and oak often needs a full year or more. Burn wood under 20% moisture; seasoned wood is darker, cracked at the ends and sounds hollow when knocked together.
Can I burn pine in my fireplace?
Yes, if it's well seasoned. Dry pine burns fast and hot. Wet pine smokes and builds creosote. Have the chimney inspected yearly regardless of wood type.
Can I take firewood from my tree to my house at LBI or upstate?
NJDA and Don't Move Firewood advise buying or using wood near where you burn it, generally within 50 miles. All NJ counties are under spotted lanternfly quarantine, so inspect wood and don't carry egg masses.
Should I keep wood from a pine killed by beetles?
It's safer to have it chipped or hauled. Beetle-killed pine can carry insects to nearby trees, and dead pine piles near the house add fuel in Pinelands towns.
