Tree permits in Beach Haven

Beach Haven adopted its tree removal and replacement chapter on June 10, 2024 (Beach Haven Code, Ch. 190). It covers removal of street trees 2.5 inches or more in diameter at breast height and other trees 6 inches or more, generally with an application fee and replacement planting. Hazard trees (dead, dying, diseased or infested, damaging a structure, or judged a threat by a certified arborist or Licensed Tree Expert) are treated separately, and some other removals may be exempt. Check the current fee and process with the borough's Construction & Zoning office before work starts.

Local notes for Beach Haven

  • Older trees: the historic district has some of the island's larger, older shade trees, often right next to porches and wires, so pruning and sectional removal are common.
  • Black pines: declining Japanese black pines are a frequent request (see black pine decline).
  • Summer season: parking and traffic around Bay Village and the beach blocks make fall and winter the easiest time for work.
  • Utility: confirm on your bill which electric company serves your address before reporting a line problem.

Before you hire

New Jersey requires tree care businesses to be licensed through the NJ Board of Tree Experts. Ask for the company's Licensed Tree Care Operator number and certificate of insurance. For stump grinding, the free 811 utility markout is required before digging (NJ One Call).

Storm damage or a tree on a wire?

If there is immediate danger, call 911. Stay away from downed lines and report them to your electric utility (JCP&L, 1-888-544-4877, serves most of Ocean County). Then see what to do after a storm and what insurance usually covers.
