Tree Removal & Stump Grinding in Lakehurst, NJ

Lakehurst is a compact borough surrounded by Manchester Township, next to Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, the former Naval Air Station best known for the 1937 Hindenburg disaster. Its neighborhoods around Lake Horicon sit on sandy Pinelands soil under pitch pines and oaks, so dead-pine removal, stump grinding and storm cleanup are the most common requests. Tell us about your job and we'll pass it to one local, independent tree company that serves Lakehurst.

Tree rules in Lakehurst

Lakehurst adopted a tree removal and replacement section, §25-27.54 of its land development chapter, in 2023 (Ordinance 2023-15; see also borough ordinances). Removing a street tree of 2.5 inches DBH or more triggers replacement. For homeowners, replacement applies if you remove more than three trees per acre in the 6- to 32.99-inch range within five years, or any single tree of 33 inches DBH or more, or a tree the borough designates as a Tree of Significance. Replacement is one to five new trees depending on size, planted within 12 months. Nuisance trees (dead, dying, diseased, or damaging a structure) are exempt, and other exemptions need written justification. Ask the borough what paperwork it wants before work starts.

Common jobs in Lakehurst

  • Dead pitch pines. Bark beetles, drought and root damage kill pines on sandy lots, and dead pines get brittle fast. See our dead pine tree guide.
  • Stump grinding after lot clearing or old removals.
  • Limbs over roofs and driveways on the older, tree-lined streets near the lake.

Local notes

Lakehurst is in the Pinelands (Pinelands Commission). Single-tree removals on a house lot are handled locally, but larger clearing can need extra review.

Before you hire

New Jersey requires tree care businesses to be licensed through the NJ Board of Tree Experts. Ask for the company's Licensed Tree Care Operator number and certificate of insurance. For stump grinding, the free 811 utility markout is required before digging (NJ One Call).

Storm damage or a tree on a wire?

If there is immediate danger, call 911. Stay away from downed lines and report them to your electric utility. Then see what to do after a storm and what insurance usually covers.
