Tree Removal & Stump Grinding in Barnegat, NJ

Barnegat Township sits on Barnegat Bay between Ocean Township and Stafford, with older neighborhoods near the bay and newer developments and adult communities west of Route 9, many of them built on former pine-oak forest. Mature oaks over roofs, dying pines and stumps left after construction are typical requests. Tell us about your job and we'll pass it to one local, independent tree company that serves Barnegat.

Tree permits in Barnegat

Barnegat's land use code (Section 55-191, “Trees and Shrubs”) requires a permit before removing regulated trees, generally those over 5 inches DBH, along with certain dogwoods and American holly. The application asks for a plot plan showing the trees to be removed, and notarized owner permission if someone else applies. The township's application form lists a $100 application fee and a $100 permit fee (Section 55-191, permit application). Check with the Code Enforcement / Zoning Office for current fees before work starts.

Local notes

West of the Parkway, Barnegat is part of the Pinelands Area (Pinelands Commission), and the township's tree rules are stricter there. Because of the permit fees, it often pays to have several trees or stumps handled in a single visit.

Before you hire

New Jersey requires tree care businesses to be licensed through the NJ Board of Tree Experts. Ask for the company's Licensed Tree Care Operator number and certificate of insurance. For stump grinding, the free 811 utility markout is required before digging (NJ One Call).

Storm damage or a tree on a wire?

If there is immediate danger, call 911. Stay away from downed lines and report them to your electric utility. Then see what to do after a storm and what insurance usually covers.
