Tree Removal & Stump Grinding in Seaside Park, NJ

Seaside Park sits on the narrow Barnegat Peninsula between Seaside Heights and Island Beach State Park, with the ocean on one side and Barnegat Bay on the other. Trees here grow in pure sand, take constant salt wind, and are usually squeezed between houses only a few feet apart. Tell us about your job and we'll pass it to one local, independent tree company that serves Seaside Park.

Tree permits in Seaside Park

The borough's tree ordinance requires a Tree Removal Application to the Zoning Officer, with a $10 per-tree fee, before removing a street tree 2.5 inches or more in diameter or any other tree 6 inches or more (Seaside Park tree removal ordinance (§ 200-56.1)). The application needs a sketch of the lot showing the trees, and the trees must be flagged before the zoning officer's site visit. The ordinance says the officer inspects within 10 business days and decides within 20, a permit lasts 12 months, and it must be posted on site while the work is done. Replacement planting can be a condition. Confirm the current fee and process with the borough before you schedule.

Seaside Heights, Lavallette and Berkeley's South Seaside Park section have their own rules, so check with the town that the property is in.

Local notes for Seaside Park

  • Small, close lots: Most streets between the Boulevard and the bay have homes only a few feet apart, so removals are done in pieces and stump grinding often needs a narrow walk-behind grinder.
  • Shore pines: Pitch pines and Japanese black pines are common here, the same species mix as the maritime forest at Island Beach State Park next door. Black pines that are browning from the bottom up or oozing pitch are worth checking before storm season.
  • Storm exposure: The peninsula took heavy damage in Superstorm Sandy, and nor'easters still drive salt and wind across it. Look over trees near the house after leaf drop (our nor'easter checklist walks through it).
  • Summer season: Route 35 traffic and parking are tight in summer, so fall and winter are the easiest time to schedule work.

Before you hire

New Jersey requires tree care businesses to be licensed through the NJ Board of Tree Experts. Ask for the company's Licensed Tree Care Operator number and certificate of insurance. For stump grinding, the free 811 utility markout is required before digging (NJ One Call).

Storm damage or a tree on a wire?

If there is immediate danger, call 911. Stay away from downed lines and report them to your electric utility (JCP&L, 1-888-544-4877, serves most of Ocean County). Then see what to do after a storm and what insurance usually covers.
