Tree Removal & Stump Grinding in Tuckerton, NJ

Tuckerton is a small historic borough at the southern tip of Ocean County, on Tuckerton Creek and Lake Pohatcong, bordered by Little Egg Harbor Township and home to the Tuckerton Seaport. Salt air, sandy soil and coastal storms are hard on pines and oaks, so dead-tree removal, storm cleanup and stump grinding are common jobs here. Tell us about your job and we'll pass it to one local, independent tree company that serves Tuckerton.

Tree rules in Tuckerton

In December 2025 Tuckerton repealed and replaced Chapter 244, “Trees,” with a tree removal and replacement ordinance (Tuckerton Ch. 244 (Ord. 10-2025)). It covers street trees of 2.5 inches DBH or more and other trees of 6 inches DBH or more. Replacement runs from one to four new trees, depending on the size of the tree removed, or the owner can pay $300 per tree into the borough's tree fund. Residents who remove fewer than four trees per acre (under 33 inches DBH) are exempt, and hazard trees can be removed with no fee or replacement when a certified arborist or NJ Licensed Tree Expert, or the borough, confirms the hazard. Anyone claiming an exemption has to give the borough written justification, and the ordinance sets a $500-per-tree fine for violations. Check with Construction & Code Enforcement before work starts.

Common jobs in Tuckerton

  • Dead pines and storm-damaged oaks on older lots near the creek and lake.
  • Tight downtown lots along Main Street (Route 9), where trees stand close to homes and wires.
  • Stump grinding after removals or lot clearing.

Local notes

Keep a note or arborist's letter for any hazard tree you remove, since the exemption depends on documentation. For homes on the water, ask how the crew will protect bulkheads and docks when lowering wood.

Before you hire

New Jersey requires tree care businesses to be licensed through the NJ Board of Tree Experts. Ask for the company's Licensed Tree Care Operator number and certificate of insurance. For stump grinding, the free 811 utility markout is required before digging (NJ One Call).

Storm damage or a tree on a wire?

If there is immediate danger, call 911. Stay away from downed lines and report them to your electric utility. Then see what to do after a storm and what insurance usually covers.
