Why Brick yards end up with stumps

Brick Township is one of the most densely built towns in Ocean County, on the Barnegat Bay and the Metedeconk River. Many lots are compact, with trees close to fences, sheds, pools and the house. When those trees come down, the stump often gets left behind, and it becomes a mowing obstacle, a trip hazard, a place for ants and fungi, or the thing standing between you and a new patio or shed.

What stump grinding costs

One New Jersey company's published guide puts grinding at roughly $100 to $500 per stump, depending on diameter, root spread and access (NJ stump grinding guide). Several stumps in one visit usually cost less per stump than calling back for each one. Things that push the price up in Brick:

  • Access. A stump behind a fence or between houses may need a compact grinder. Measure your narrowest gate and include it in your request.
  • Size and roots. Wide oak stumps and pines with big surface roots take longer.
  • Obstacles. Stumps against foundations, fences, patios or buried lines need slower, careful work.
  • Cleanup. Leaving the chips in the hole is cheapest; hauling them away and adding topsoil costs more.

Call 811 first

Grinding goes below the soil line, and New Jersey law requires a free utility markout before digging (NJ One Call). Gas, water, electric and irrigation lines are common in Brick's small yards. Ask the stump company whether it will request the markout, or call 811 yourself a few business days before the job.

What to expect on grinding day

  1. The operator checks for rocks, markout flags and anything near the stump.
  2. The grinder chews the stump and major surface roots below grade. Ask how deep they'll go: deeper grinding matters if you plan to plant or build there.
  3. You're left with a pile of wood chips and soil. You can use them as mulch, have them backfilled into the hole, or have them hauled off.
  4. The chips settle as they decay, so plan to top the spot with soil before seeding.

Grinding vs. full stump removal

Grinding leaves the deeper roots to rot in place and is the usual choice for lawns and garden beds. Full extraction pulls the root ball and makes sense mainly before footings, hardscape or a pool. If you're building, say so in your request.

Permits

Grinding an existing stump usually doesn't need a tree permit, but removing the tree in the first place may. Brick's tree chapter exempts trees on a lot of one acre or less with an existing single-family home, but larger lots and development need a permit (Brick Township Code, Ch. 453). If the tree is still standing, check with the township, or see the Brick page for details.
