Tree Removal & Stump Grinding in Asbury Park, NJ

Asbury Park is the small, dense Monmouth County shore city between Deal Lake to the north and Wesley Lake (and Ocean Grove) to the south, with the boardwalk, Convention Hall and the Stone Pony on the ocean side, Sunset Lake and Fifth Avenue's big Victorians in the north end, and Neptune Township along its west edge. Lots are narrow, two- and three-family houses and new condos sit shoulder to shoulder, and many of the biggest trees are old street trees and lakefront shade trees leaning over sidewalks, cars and wires. Most work here is climbed and lowered in sections with small equipment. Tell us about your job and we'll pass it to one local, independent tree company that serves Asbury Park.

Tree permits in Asbury Park

Asbury Park's rules are in Asbury Park City Code, Ch. 23 (Tree Removal and Replacement), which the City moved into its own chapter by Ordinance 2026-8 (adopted March 25, 2026). Applications go to the Department of Public Works. As posted when we checked on November 3, 2026:

  • Permits cover private property too: you need approval before removing a street tree 2.5 inches or more across (measured 4½ feet up), or any tree 6 inches or more on your own lot. Unlike Neptune Township next door, there is no general exemption for single-family homes.
  • Fee and paperwork: $25 application fee. Include a sketch of the lot showing the house, walks, driveway and pool, where the trees to come down are and where replacements will go, and tie a ribbon around each tree. The City's tree expert or Public Works inspects and grants, denies or suggests changes in writing within 30 business days.
  • Replacement: 1 tree for a trunk up to 12.99 inches, 2 for 13–22.99, 3 for 23–32.99 and 4 for 33 inches and up (each at least 2-inch caliper), or a fee in lieu of $500, $1,000, $1,500 or $2,000 per tree. Replacements must go in within 6 months and be watered and kept alive for 2 years.
  • Dead and hazard trees: dead or dying, infested, or damaging trees (or ones a certified arborist or licensed tree expert calls a threat) need no replacement, but you still file the application and pay the fee and wait for approval.
  • Street trees and pruning: under § STC1-7.1 of the City Code, cutting, trimming, climbing with spikes or disturbing the roots of any tree on a City street needs a written permit from the Shade Tree Commission. Street-tree stumps must be removed 8 to 12 inches below grade and backfilled. Fines run $500 to $2,000.

Download the City's Tree Removal & Replacement Application, and call Public Works (732-775-0900) or email the Environmental Shade Tree Commission (ESTC) ([email protected]) to confirm before work. Apply before anyone cuts, even for a backyard tree.

Local notes for Asbury Park

  • Tight lots and no room to drop: with narrow lots, permit parking and cars on both sides of most streets, nearly every removal is climbed and lowered in pieces. Off-season weekdays are easier for street access (tree removal, tree removal cost).
  • Lakefront and boardwalk blocks: trees along Deal Lake, Sunset Lake, Wesley Lake and the blocks near the boardwalk take salt spray and northeast wind. Browned evergreens aren't always dead, but split leaders and lean after a storm need a look (salt damage, leaning or split trees).
  • Roots, sidewalks and planting strips: old street trees lift sidewalks and curbs across the city. Pruning or root work on a street tree needs the Shade Tree Commission's permit, so ask before cutting roots for a new walk or driveway (hazard tree assessment, stump grinding).
  • Shared trees: on lots this close, trunks and limbs often cross the property line, so agree with your neighbor first (cutting overhanging branches, who pays when a neighbor's tree falls).
  • Neighbors: Ocean Grove, Neptune Township, Bradley Beach and Deal.

Before you hire

New Jersey requires tree care businesses to be licensed through the NJ Board of Tree Experts. Ask for the company's Licensed Tree Care Operator number and certificate of insurance. For stump grinding, the free 811 utility markout is required before digging (NJ One Call).

Storm damage or a tree on a wire?

If there is immediate danger, call 911. Stay away from downed lines and report them to your electric utility (JCP&L, 1-888-544-4877, also serves this part of Monmouth County). Then see what to do after a storm and what insurance usually covers.
