Tree Removal & Stump Grinding in Avon-by-the-Sea, NJ

Avon-by-the-Sea is the quiet one-square-mile Monmouth County beach borough between Bradley Beach and the Shark River Inlet, with Sylvan Lake on its north side and the Shark River marinas to the south. Streets are lined with mature shade trees in front of large Victorian and newer shore homes, lots are narrow, and blocks near the ocean and the river take salt spray and nor'easter wind, so most removals are climbed and lowered in sections over roofs, porches and wires. Tell us about your job and we'll pass it to one local, independent tree company that serves Avon-by-the-Sea.

Tree permits in Avon-by-the-Sea

Avon regulates trees under Avon-by-the-Sea Borough Code, Ch. 77 (Tree Removal and Replacement), adopted in 2024 and rewritten in full on August 10, 2026 by Ord. No. 10-2026. As posted when we checked on November 1, 2026:

  • Street trees: removing a street tree (in the sidewalk, planting strip or right-of-way) 2.5 inches or more across needs a tree removal application to the Zoning Officer, and nothing comes down until the borough approves it. The code says removal should include the stump.
  • Trees on your lot: an application is needed for a non-street tree 6 inches or more across (measured 4.5 feet up) when you're getting zoning approval or a building permit that adds impervious or building coverage, like an addition, patio or new house. Ordinary removals on your own lot with no such project aren't covered by this chapter.
  • Fee: $40 per application, one application per tree. The 2026 form asks for a map or survey (original plus two copies), a copy of the homeowner's liability insurance, and a signed letter explaining why the tree needs to come out.
  • Replacement: replant 1 to 4 trees (at least 1.5-inch caliper) per tree removed depending on size, within 12 months, and keep them alive for two years. If they can't fit on the property, the borough can approve another spot or a $500 per tree payment into the tree fund; the 2026 form lists alternate replacement amounts of $500 to $1,250 by size.
  • Hazard trees: dead, dying, diseased or dangerous trees, as determined by a NJ Licensed Tree Expert (or Code Enforcement for some cases), can come down with no fee or replacement; written justification from a Licensed Tree Expert is required.

Violations cost $100 plus $500 per tree into the tree fund, and each tree is a separate violation. Download Avon's 2026 tree removal application. If the tree is near the curb or you're planning work that needs a zoning permit, apply before anyone cuts.

Local notes for Avon-by-the-Sea

  • Street trees need approval: the big shade trees in the curb strip are street trees, so even a dead-looking one needs an application or a Licensed Tree Expert's hazard letter first (how to check a NJ tree care license).
  • Bring your insurance: Avon's form asks for a copy of the homeowner's liability policy, so have it ready along with a survey before you book a crew.
  • Salt, wind and flooding: blocks along the ocean, Sylvan Lake and the Shark River take salt spray and storm surge (salt damage, black pine decline).
  • Neighbors: Belmar (across the Shark River), Wall Township and Spring Lake.

Before you hire

New Jersey requires tree care businesses to be licensed through the NJ Board of Tree Experts. Ask for the company's Licensed Tree Care Operator number and certificate of insurance. For stump grinding, the free 811 utility markout is required before digging (NJ One Call).

Storm damage or a tree on a wire?

If there is immediate danger, call 911. Stay away from downed lines and report them to your electric utility (JCP&L, 1-888-544-4877, also serves this part of Monmouth County). Then see what to do after a storm and what insurance usually covers.
