Tree permits in Manasquan
Manasquan's tree rules are in Manasquan Borough Code, Ch. 23 (Shade Trees), which the borough amended in 2024, 2025 and again on March 30, 2026 (Ord. 2592-26), as posted when we checked on October 28, 2026. Here is how it breaks down:
- Street trees (borough right-of-way): you may not kill or remove one without permission from the Shade Tree Commission. The code limits right-of-way removals to cases of property damage, exposed roots or a damaged sidewalk; approval comes from the DPW Superintendent and the Shade Tree Commission chair. An approved removal means planting one replacement tree (2.5-inch caliper, from the borough's list) and paying $250 to the Municipal Tree Escrow Fund; the non-refundable application fee is credited toward that $250.
- Your own yard, no construction: § 23-2.3 says nothing in the private-property rules restricts an owner's right to remove trees where no construction permit for a new or replacement house is sought.
- Construction: the rules apply to vacant lots, demolitions with new construction, and foundation additions over 500 square feet, and to trees removed within six months before the construction permit application. Trees 4 inches DBH and up go on the survey, and removed trees are replaced 1 to 4 for 1 depending on size, or paid into the escrow fund at $500 to $2,500 per tree.
- Dead or hazardous trees: can be removed, including from the right-of-way, if a borough-appointed tree expert documents the condition, and dead, diseased or problematic trees can be removed without a fee with prior Shade Tree Commission/DPW approval.
The Manasquan Shade Tree Commission also runs a resident tree buying program and free street trees. Because the rules changed three times in two years, call the borough before removing any tree near the sidewalk or if you plan to build or add on within six months.
Local notes for Manasquan
- Salt and wind: trees near the beach and inlet take salt spray and wind burn; browning shore pines aren't always dead, so get them looked at before removing (black pine decline, salt damage).
- Tight lots: narrow streets and small yards mean most removals are done in sections with ropes, and the crew may need a parking or driveway plan; say so in your request.
- Low, wet ground: blocks near the river, Watson's Creek, Stockton Lake and Glimmer Glass can flood in big storms, and soggy roots let trees tip more easily (nor'easter tree damage).
- Building or adding on? Trees removed up to six months before a construction permit still count toward replacement, so plan removals with your builder.
- Neighbors: Point Pleasant Beach across the inlet, Point Pleasant across the river, and Wall Township.
Before you hire
New Jersey requires tree care businesses to be licensed through the NJ Board of Tree Experts. Ask for the company's Licensed Tree Care Operator number and certificate of insurance. For stump grinding, the free 811 utility markout is required before digging (NJ One Call).
Storm damage or a tree on a wire?
If there is immediate danger, call 911. Stay away from downed lines and report them to your electric utility (JCP&L, 1-888-544-4877, also serves this part of Monmouth County). Then see what to do after a storm and what insurance usually covers.
