Jackson stumps come in batches

Jackson is Ocean County's largest township by land area, and many homes in Cassville, Whitesville, Holmansville and the Jackson Mills area sit on an acre or more cut out of pine-oak forest. So the typical call isn't one stump: it's six oaks taken down for a pool, a line of dead pitch pines along the driveway, or a dozen old stumps left by a previous owner. That changes how you should get it priced.

Short answer: For 5+ stumps, ask for both a per-stump and a by-the-hour price, and get the root radius and chip plan in writing. Removal of standing trees falls under Jackson's Chapter 405 (Jackson Code Ch. 405). Call 732-506-2167 or use the form.

Oaks, pines and regrowth

Jackson lots are heavy in black and white oak, scrub oak and pitch pine. Pitch pine can resprout from its base after cutting (USDA Silvics: pitch pine), and oak stumps throw suckers for years. Grinding below the root collar removes most of the sprouting tissue; see stump sprouts and replanting for follow-up. Old chestnut and black oak stumps are dense and slow to grind, which is where per-stump prices climb.

Chapter 405, escrow and the order of operations

Jackson regulates tree removal under Chapter 405, with a $10 application and $25 inspection fee listed on the permit application, and removed trees may need replacement or a Tree Escrow payment (Jackson Code Ch. 405, Jackson permit application). The stump comes after the tree, so get the removal permit squared away first, and keep the paperwork; inspectors may want to see the trees before they're cut.

Sandy soil and well and septic lines

Many Jackson homes are on private wells and septic. Mark the well line, septic tank, distribution box and field before grinding; 811 doesn't mark private systems (NJ One Call (811)). In deep sand the ground settles after grinding, so plan on topsoil before seeding.

Frequently asked questions

Is it cheaper to grind many stumps at once in Jackson?

Usually. The trip and setup are paid once, so each extra stump costs less. Some companies price big jobs by the hour or day instead of per stump. Ask for both.

Do I need a Jackson permit to grind stumps?

Grinding stumps of trees already removed generally isn't regulated as removal. Removing trees falls under Jackson's Chapter 405, with an application and inspection fee and possible replacement or Tree Escrow. Ask the township before trees come down.

Why do my oak and pine stumps keep sprouting?

Oaks and pitch pine both sprout from the base and roots. Grinding below the root collar and mowing off any later sprouts usually ends it.

Should I grind or grub stumps for a new building or pole barn?

Grubbing (full extraction) is better where you'll pour footings or a slab. Grinding is fine for lawn and pasture areas.
