Two kinds of lots
Tree removal in Little Egg Harbor usually means one of two very different jobs. In Mystic Islands and the other lagoon neighborhoods, it's a tree squeezed between a house, a bulkhead and a dock, with no room to drop anything. Out west, it's a tall pitch pine or oak on a wooded Pinelands lot, often stressed by salt air, sandy soil and storms, or in the way of new construction.
Common removal jobs
- Pines on lagoon lots with no room to fell, taken down in small sections or with a crane.
- Dead pitch pines on wooded lots. See the dead pine guide.
- Storm-damaged trees after nor'easters off Great Bay.
- Lot and project clearing for new homes, additions and driveways; see land clearing.
Little Egg Harbor's tree permit rule
Little Egg Harbor's land use chapter (Chapter 215) requires a tree removal permit before removing a street tree of 2.5 inches DBH or more, or a non-street tree of 6 inches DBH or more. Applications go to the Department of Community Development and Planning with a site plan, and no regulated tree may come down before the township approves it. The ordinance lists a $25 filing fee per building lot for new construction or residential building sites (Little Egg Harbor Ord. 2025-08, township permits page). Western parts of the township are in the Pinelands Area (Pinelands Commission), where larger clearing can need extra review. Check the current form and fee with the township.
Lagoon-lot tips
- Ask how the crew will protect bulkheads, docks and boat lifts when lowering wood.
- Check where the truck and chipper will park on narrow lagoon streets.
- Ask whether any extra approvals apply to work right at the water's edge.
- Lagoon homes often share tight side yards. Let your neighbors know the work date, especially if the crew needs to pass through or set up next to their property.
What it costs
Tree size, closeness to the house, bulkheads or wires, access and cleanup drive the price. For local context, published estimates for Toms River put typical removals at roughly $500 to $2,300, averaging about $1,400 (HomeBlue). Lagoon jobs that need sectional rigging or a crane tend to cost more than a pine on an open wooded lot that can be felled. Stump grinding is usually separate, and since permits are handled per lot, it can pay to bundle several trees into one permit. See the cost guide.
Before you hire
Ask for the company's NJ Licensed Tree Care Operator number (NJ Board of Tree Experts) and certificate of insurance, and get the scope in writing. After big storms, be wary of door-to-door crews. Next door, Tuckerton has its own ordinance; see the Tuckerton page. More local info is on the Little Egg Harbor page.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a permit to remove a tree in Little Egg Harbor?
Under Chapter 215, a permit is needed for street trees of 2.5 inches DBH or more and other trees of 6 inches DBH or more. The ordinance lists a $25 filing fee per building lot for new construction or residential sites. Confirm with the township.
Is tree removal in Mystic Islands more expensive?
Often, because small lagoon lots usually mean sectional removal or a crane, and crews must protect bulkheads and docks.
Does Tuckerton follow the same rules?
No. Tuckerton is a separate borough with its own tree ordinance.
