Berkeley's trees
Few Ocean County towns cover as much ground as Berkeley: Pinelands forest around Double Trouble State Park in the west, Bayville and Pinewald along the bay, big adult communities like Holiday City and Silver Ridge Park in between, and even South Seaside Park and Island Beach State Park across the bay. Most removal calls come from sandy lots where pitch pines and oaks have grown up over houses that were built decades ago.
Common removal jobs in Berkeley
- Dead and dying pines in the wooded sections and older developments. See the dead pine guide.
- Trees over homes in adult communities, where lots are small and trees are often decades old.
- Storm cleanup near the bay after nor'easters.
- Clearing for projects on larger wooded lots.
Berkeley's tree rules
Berkeley's tree rules are in Chapter 23, “Protection of Trees,” of the township code (Berkeley Township Code, Ch. 23). It exempts trees on a tract of two acres or less with a single-family home, and dead, diseased or dangerous trees, but trees of 1.5 inches or more in the public right-of-way need a permit (fee waived). A newer section adds replacement rules for street trees of 2.5 inches DBH or more and other trees of 6 inches DBH or more, with hazard trees exempt. Where a permit is needed, the fee is $10 for one to 10 trees, and applications go to the township's code enforcement staff with a sketch showing each tree's location, trunk size and type. Much of western Berkeley lies in the Pinelands Area (Pinelands Commission), where larger clearing can need extra review. Confirm the current requirements with the township before work starts.
Adult communities and HOAs
If you live in Holiday City, Silver Ridge Park or another association, check its rules before you schedule anything. Many associations control tree work on individual lots, need approval first, set work hours, or handle certain trees themselves. Get the approval in writing and share it with the tree company.
What it costs
Price depends on tree size, how close it is to the house, wires and neighbors, equipment access and cleanup. For local context, published estimates for Toms River put typical removals at roughly $500 to $2,300, averaging about $1,400 (HomeBlue). Several dead pines in one visit usually cost less per tree. See the cost guide.
Before you hire
Ask for the company's NJ Licensed Tree Care Operator number (NJ Board of Tree Experts) and certificate of insurance, and get the price and scope in writing. If you're in an association, give the company a copy of the approval and any work-hour rules before the job. After storms, be cautious with door-to-door crews and large cash deposits. More local info is on the Berkeley page.
